“The Muses” is the theme of this year’s Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach where works of art come to life nightly until Aug. 31. This year’s show will especially delight youngsters when a segment dedicated to movie posters of the 1930s and 1950s is enacted. We can’t give away any secrets, but hold onto your seats for an appearance of King Kong and the Fifty-Foot Woman.

The Pageant of the Masters has been thrilling Southern California audiences since 1932, but this year’s event is special for telling the story of the muses, the women who posed for or supported artists whose works are featured. Few of these recollections had a happy ending, but viewers learn more about the history behind paintings they’re familiar with.

A favorite of the audience is seeing how each living painting is created. With the magic of props, make-up and lighting the steps are demonstrated in how life-size replicas of works of art are created.

Arab Americans will be especially interested in Maxfield Parish’s 1918 oil painting entitled “Garden of Allah” and Elihu Vedder’s 1863 oil painting named “Question of the “Sphnix.”

Maxfield Parish’s 1918 oil painting, “Garden of Allah” comes to life nightly at the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach until Aug. 31.

The show begins at 8:30 p.m. but be sure to arrive early to view hundreds of exhibits by world class artists, sculptors and jewelry designers that are on the grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

And don’t miss the Junior Art exhibit featuring amazing work by K-12 students. Submissions were made by students throughout Orange County and a panel of judges selected an array of work that promises a whole new generation of Picassos and Klees.

To order pageant tickets go online at www.PageantTickets.com or call 1-800-487-3378.
